We have the powerful opportunity to instill healthy habits and make positive lifestyle changes in kids right now as their bodies and brains are growing and before they start developing unhealthy food preferences and habits that are hard to break. Oak Ridge Children’s Academy is committed in making a lasting impact on every kid, teaching them how to grow up healthy. We enjoy role modeling and practicing healthy eating healthy and being active. Our center serves only nutritious foods and make physical activity a top priority at every age and stage, hoping that the kids will start asking for the same wholesome foods and fun activities at home.
The meals and snacks provided at our center include a variety of items from each major food group. We serve many fresh fruits and vegetables including three snacks a day that our children have grown to love. We also offer a variety of whole wheat pastas, breads, and fresh meats such as ground turkey, chicken, and fish. No breaded or fried items will be offered at our center. Special care has been taken to include Vitamin A and Iron at least three times a week and Vitamin C everyday.
Children are encouraged to serve themselves (Family style dining) in order to develop proper eye-hand coordination and decision-making skills. Food will not be used as a punishment or as a reward to control behavior. Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child at any time.
We make “WATER” more visible and accessible for self-serve inside and outside classroom environment. Special care has been taken to include Vitamin A and iron at least three times a week, and vitamin C everyday.
We serve breakfast, lunch and both morning and afternoon snacks. Healthy monthly menus are posted in the office and cafeteria.
We offer homogenized whole milk for one year old's and skim milk for children two years and older.
We are delighted that The National ECELC Collaborative in Washington has recently recognized our focus on good healthy food. Here is an extract from their press release:
"Maritza Lopez, Director, has worked with her team to implement two ambitious action plans. The first one centers on healthy eating. She has changed the menus and worked with her food vendor to order only whole grains, lean meats and healthy fruit and vegetables. The kitchen is spotless and the cook is fully engaged in creating healthy new snacks like black bean dip. There is an impressive walk in refrigerator that is stocked with an abundance of healthy food "
